Making headlines

The healthcare estate has been in the news in recent weeks, highlighting the importance that buildings have on the delivery of effective and patient-centred services.

In the space of a month, headlines have told of deaths of patients believed to be connected to pigeon droppings at a hospital in Scotland; fears as it is revealed a whopping 90% of hospital buildings contain potentially-deadly asbestos; and news that half of all GP surgeries are unfit for purpose.

You can read all about these pressing issues in our news section (p7); plus find out how facilities managers are dealing with them and read advice from industry experts.

In this edition we are also looking ahead at the challenges and opportunities in the healthcare construction sector.

Our special Market Overview (p10) reveals how a shift away from large-scale PFI projects and uncertainly over Brexit are changing the healthcare market. But this is not all bad news, as promised NHS funding is likely to trickle through over the coming months, kick-starting activity in the sector once again.

The care sector is also offering a wealth of opportunities, and investors are still happily funding health and social care projects (p13).

Plus, healthcare infrastructure experts, Jitesh Patel of Kajima UK; and John McDonald of GRAHAM offer their thoughts on the next 12 months (p14). We also look at how offsite construction methods are likely to become even more popular in the future as they offer time and cost savings at a time when services, and budgets, are strained (p30).

And our furniture features (p47) include articles on financing options, pressure mattress design, and waiting room chairs.

It’s clear, as we make our way into 2019, that the healthcare estate is a busy sector, and is set to remain so, both in terms of projects and the need to bring existing facilities up to scratch.

Over the coming year we will be covering key issues impacting on the healthcare estate and bringing you news of the available solutions.
