READING LIST ALCHEMY, BY RORY SUTHERLAND
Rory Sutherland is one of adland’s most influential figures, having worked his way up from junior copywriter to vice- chairman at Ogilvy UK. In Alchemy he argues that decision-making requires less maths and more magic. He bemoans a
world where analytics and algorithms have supplanted creativity,
citing a dizzying array of successful left-field ventures. One notable case study describes how his colleagues in Colombia recruited the Church to persuade the nation’s large Catholic population to start eating lionfish – an invasive species that’s “poisonous on the outside but
delicious on the inside” – in order to prevent
an ecological disaster in the Caribbean. You may not agree with all of Sutherland’s ideas. Indeed, he admits: “Some of what I say will probably later be shown to be BS.” But his pithy anecdotes make for a consistently entertaining read – and may convince you that just because data is big these days, it’s not necessarily clever.
