SECURING YOUR FUTURE

T

he looming threat of cyber attacks is the number-one concern for firms in Asia, Europe and North America. So concluded a report by the World

Economic Forum (WEF) late last year, based on a survey of 12,000 business leaders in 140 countries. Indeed, the WEF warns that 74 per cent of businesses can expect to be hacked this year, predicting that the economic loss to cyber crime will hit $3 trillion by 2020. It’s clear that one of the greatest challenges for companies of all sizes is to reconcile the vast opportunities being created by advances in connectivity with the fast-evolving data threats they bring with them. And so, as the government’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) prepares to engage with businesses at its CyberUK event in April, this issue of Director brings together leaders with the experience to help you both counter the risks and focus on the potential rewards. The IoD’s interim director general, Edwin Morgan, (p13) highlights that there is much work to be done: a survey of IoD members has found that, while 95 per cent consider cyber security to be important to their business, almost half have no formal strategy on this issue. But, as the NCSC’s chief executive notes (p14), UK plc is well capable of rectifying the situation. Reassurance and inspiration can be found in abundance, too, in the interview with our latest cover stars (p17). Poppy Gustafsson and Dave Palmer, co-founders of UK tech unicorn Darktrace, discuss their mission to use AI in fighting cyber crime and explain how effective data defences lie within the means of firms of all sizes. Practical guidance on installing cyber capability at board level comes from IoD member and data security guru Matt Palmer (p24). The IoD’s Information and Advisory Service, meanwhile, sets out a checklist of actions to take if an attack should hit home (p48). Further help is on the way at the IoD’s upcoming event series, IoD Open House on the Road (p54). At its “Connected” events around the country, cyber security will be a key subject to be discussed by leaders including contributors to this edition.
