FACING THE FUTURE, HEAD ON

?

For every leader inspired by the potential of artificial intelligence, it seems that there’s another who’s worried that it will spawn legions of job-stealing robots. The AI: More Than Human exhibition strives to increase understanding by exploring the complex story of the quest for silicon sentience.

CREATURE FEATURE

Viewers of the episode of sci-fi TV series Black Mirror that featured AI killer bees may well fear the rise of artificial animals too. The robotic dog and fish on show here won’t give you nightmares, but there is a

synthetic apiary that will enable bees to make honey all year round. Hmm…

BOTTED HISTORY Among other aspects, the exhibition covers AI’s roots in Shinto; the work of Victorian pioneers Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace; and more recent advances, including Deep Blue, which defeated grandmaster Garry Kasparov at chess; and Watson, which won episodes of US quiz show Jeopardy!

ARTISTIC AI

Artist Lawrence Lek will discuss his work 2065, set in a future where people spend all day playing video games, while Mario Klingemann will show how he uses algorithms in his art. And music fans may like Massive Attack’s contribution: the band have encoded their classic album Mezzanine in strands of synthetic DNA.

DID YOU KNOW that MIT researcher Joy Buolamwini has been been probing the algorithmic bias of AI facial-analysis systems ever since finding that they wouldn’t recognise her face until she wore a white mask? Her TED talk has attracted more than one million views.
