Welcome
Welcome to South Bank. Beyond the new name and the new look, I hope you’ll notice a shift in emphasis right the way through the magazine
By focusing on real-world issues that affect us all, we hope to find synergy between the energy and determination of LSBU students and graduates and the connections and support within our alumni community.
Our main feature will no doubt strike a chord with many readers. Following on from a lively debate on the politics of planning in London, we invited alumni, staff and stakeholders to share their views on the housing crisis (page 10). Whatever your personal situation, it’s hard not to be troubled by the growing gap between supply and demand for homes in the UK.
Shifting our focus away from the domestic scene, on page 20 we look at the impact of the Greek debt crisis through the lens of Theodora Papanikita (Digital Photography, 2015), who shares her perspective as a recent graduate in a country facing immense challenges.
Of course, every challenge is an opportunity for change – and it is hard to think of any sector more in flux in recent years than healthcare. Professor Warren Turner explains how LSBU is leading the debate on the future of the health service (page 22), while on page 9 we consider the planned changes to revalidation for nurses and midwives that will affect so many of our alumni.
Anyone looking to gain their own CPD points will not want to miss out on this year’s Hitesh Tailor Lecture, to be held on campus in November. Dr Sue Black, recently named one of Europe’s top 50 women in technology for 2015, will explore how technology can open up opportunities for all. See page 18 for more.
Over the coming months, we’ll be looking to strengthen our alumni community, and creating new opportunities for you to get involved. We’ll also be sharing the findings from our recent survey. Thanks to all the nearly 5000 alumni who took part. And as ever, we would love to hear your news, views and thoughts on the magazine.
