KAMPERIS COFFEE AND SPICE

Life through a lens

THEODORA PAPANIKITA

BA Digital Photography, 2015

Theodora Papanikita (BA Digital Photography, 2015) was born and brought up in Rhodes Old Town. In this photo essay she shares her perspectives on her home town, the impact of the Greek economic crisis and her thoughts about the future. ‘I chose to shoot on film to capture the texture and atmosphere of the place. The Old Town is a tourist destination but it’s a real town too. Inevitably the crisis has had an impact but people are continuing with their lives, starting businesses and looking forward. For myself, I see my future in Greece, hopefully working as a documentary and portrait photographer.’

‘Kamperis Coffee and Spice is a tiny family-owned business, and has been here in the Old Town since the 1920s. I love how while everything has changed around it, the shop has stayed the same. They are still using the same roasting machine they’ve had since the Second World War. Tourists do go there, but they have a lot of faithful local customers too – you see the old Greek ladies going in and counting out their euros for a little bit of cinnamon and a pack of the special coffee that they’ve been drinking for decades.’
