HOUSING

Real world: Housing

Only half as many new homes were built in 2014 as are actually needed, and the UK currently faces a shortfall of more than 500,000 dwellings. House prices are spiralling, and private sector rents continue to rise. House ownership is declining, and homelessness is a growing problem.

Meanwhile construction projects are seemingly springing up everywhere, particularly in the capital, but are they really providing a sustainable solution to the underlying issues? As demand continues to grow – and with a major new regeneration project under way right on our doorstep, at Elephant and Castle – we asked our alumni, staff and local stakeholders to share their perspectives on one of the biggest issues facing us today.

Jeff Joseph (BA Housing Studies, 2014), Community Investment Manager at Higgins Construction PLC, on site at King’s Crescent in Hackney. Find out how he’s working to engage the local community with this major regeneration project on page 16.
