‘This has always been a close-knit community. People looking at the estate from the outside don’t always see it, but it’s true. Me and my late husband, Vince, were really involved with the youth club and the tenants’ association. We’ve got this allotment area here (pictured below left), and a couple of years ago we got Pocket Park funding from the government to put in a small orchard. This redevelopment is going to bring new blood into the area, and a different vibe. I think it’s really exciting. Now people can see it’s happening, that sense of community is starting to come out again. For me personally, this has been a great opportunity. After Vince died I needed work, so I’d taken on a cleaning job but I had to travel a long way to do it and the wages weren’t great. Then the ad for this job literally dropped through my letterbox. It was perfect for me. It’s done so much for my self-worth. I’ve got to say, Higgins have been fantastic to work for. They’re giving me loads of training, and I’m really happy about that. To me, it’s a new lease of life.’
