Largest survey of school uniform prices reveals £100 basket cost

F

ollowing the largest survey of school uniform costs in the UK, The Schoolwear Association has found the average cost of compulsory school uniform and sportswear items is £101.19 per pupil. The Schoolwear Association surveyed a range of retailers from across the country that supply 11.9% of all state secondary schools in England – representing 409 schools and approximately 395,000 students. As part of the survey, the purchase history of what was actually sold each

year for the schools was also analysed and showed that, on average, the spend per pupil of compulsory items was only £36.24, demonstrating the benefits of buying better quality, longer lasting garments that don’t need to be replaced every year. Matthew Easter, co-chair of The Schoolwear Association, said: "This is the largest survey of secondary school uniform we have ever undertaken, and it’s been very worthwhile to be able to prove through actual data what we already believed to be the case that uniform

lice Morrison, a Craghoppers ambassador, BBC

presenter and writer completed a 2,000km walk across the Sahara Desert on Wednesday, February 12. She started the trek on

Tuesday, November 26 from Oued Chbika on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The aim of the expedition was to explore how climate change is impacting the region, in particular the Nomadic tribes. Severe droughts have caused the Sahara to grow

costs are both reasonable and fair. “School uniform items are worn for around 195 days of the year, and often remain worn into the evenings following the school day. On this basis, we believe that just over £100 represents excellent value for money.”

The basket cost is derived from the average cost for boys’ and girls’ compulsory school-specific uniform and sportswear – with an average of 6.1 garments being required for an average sized pupil starting secondary school.

Alice Morrison has completed a 2,000km walk across the Sahara Desert

by 10% and desertification has taken up 16% of arable land every year. Ms Morrison wore Craghoppers gear, such as the Expolite II Hooded Jacket, NosiLife Adventure Shirt and Kiwi Pro II Trouser throughout her expedition.

She said: “A big thank you to Craghoppers for sponsoring this, without whom, this expedition to look at the effects of desertification on the people and landscape of the Sahara… would not be possible. “My boots have done three months across the Sahara – no sand in there or blisters! They are really good boots which are very light and flexible with a nice high top and they’re very comfortable to wear. They also have a little cover (Crawler Guard) that you can put over the top to stop the insects going in.”

D

o help users gain a better understanding of the slew of new devices that entered the market in 2019, Roland DG has released the new Roland Guide to Print and Cut. This new guide covers every aspect of running a print and cut

business, from basic concepts all the way to

choosing the most suitable device. Prospective business owners can get an idea of the investment needed to get started in

this field while existing print service providers can find inspiration for product diversification. Instead of merely producing signage and labels, the guide demonstrates how easy it is to branch into other applications like vehicle wraps and garment decoration, with plenty more inspiration in the form of Roland DG customer case studies. The Roland Guide to Print and Cut can be downloaded for free from the Roland DG website.
