Focus on Trophies & Engraving

‘It’s an exciting time’ P

remade trophies with engraved metal plaques do well because they’ve always been an affordable option for the seller and the consumer.

We sell a lot of computerised engravers, like the DE-3, for example, to consumer engraving businesses who make great money engraving names on plaques and sticking them onto trophies. Typically, the greater the level of customisation, the more the customer can expect to pay, and this is roughly reflected in the sales volumes. This isn’t likely to change, so simple, inexpensive jobs are going to remain the bread and butter for engravers, but there is an emerging trend for more complex personalised products.

www.rolanddg.co.uk Fun fact

The world’s most expensive trophy is the Stanley Cup given to the winner of the National Ice Hockey League playoff in the States. Standing 3ft tall, it features tiered rings and narrow inscribed bands and is worth an estimated £540,000.

Opening our Trophies & Engraving feature is Peter Kettle, business development manager at Roland DG (UK). He provides a quick glance at what trends Roland DG (UK) is seeing in the current market.

We’re seeing engravers investing in technologies like UV printing to print photographs of winners directly onto acrylic block – or they’re using impact printers like the Metaza MPX-95 to etch photo-quality images onto metal. In the coming years, this diversification is only going to grow. We’ll also see a lot of technologies coming together to produce unique items. Just among Roland customers, we’re already seeing businesses having a lot of success mixing digital foil decoration with engraving, or UV printing with laser cutting. It’s an exciting time if you don’t just want to engrave names on plates.
