Focus on Hospitality & Catering
Top tips for embroidery on hospitality and catering garments Hospitality & Catering garments tend to be manufactured from a fi ner gauge polyester or poly/cotton fabric. These fabrics will have some type of coating such as water repellent or anti-bacterial. This makes the fabric very resistant to stitching, so stitching this becomes an issue. When you try to add embroidery to this fabric, you may fi nd some distortion or puckering to your design. As these garments are often worn next to the skin, you need to make sure the embroidery backing, and thread does not rub on the skin. The solution is to change the way you embroider this type of fabric. Here are a few tips: • Use our Ultra Soft Backing, in 100g weight. This product is constructed using a wet laid process, so the fi bers are laid in a multi direction. You only need to use one piece per embroidery. This backing will provide a strong and stable base but allowing it to be torn away cleanly and easily afterwards. This is the softest backing in the world and only available from us.
• Try using a SES light ball point needle in size 75 or SUK medium ball point needle, to separate yarn during sewing rather than cutting the yarn, and avoid damage.
• Lubricate the fabric yarn during sewing to stop it causing friction and this will avoid thread breaks. Your needle will penetrate the yarn easier without extra pressure on your embroidery machine. The lubrication will allow your fabric yarn
to move apart during sewing. Our special Fablube spray is a sewing lubricant, and it will dry soon after you’re stitching without any residue.
• Often when customers complain about skin irritation, this is caused by the embroidery thread and underthread. We recommend using our special spun poly ticket 180 underthread. This is a thinner thread than your standard 120 so it will give you a much softer fi nish on the back. Plus, you do not need to change your bobbin as often.
