Tips for embroidery on workwear Workwear garments tend to be manufactured from a heavy gauge polyester fabric. Sometimes the fabric will have some type of coating such as water repellent or fi re retardant. This makes the fabric very tough, so stitching this becomes an issue. When you try to add embroidery to this fabric, you may fi nd some distortion to your design or extra needle breaks. The solution is to change the way you embroider this type of fabric. Here are a few tips. • Use our Soft & Easy Backing, in 40g, 50g or 60g weights. This product is constructed using a dry laid process, so the fi bers are laid in a single direction. When using lighter weights of backing you can cross lay two pieces. With the heavier weight, often one piece is enough. This backing will provide a strong and stable base but allowing it to be torn away afterwards.

• Try using a SES point needle in size 75, to displace the yarn and avoid damage. You can also try using a Titanium needle which is four times stronger than a standard needle.

• Lubricate the fabric yarn to stop it causing friction and this will avoid thread breaks. Your needle will penetrate the yarn easier without extra pressure on your embroidery machine. The lubrication will allow your fabric yarn to move apart during sewing. Our special Fablube spray is a sewing lubricant, and it will dry soon after you’re stitching without any residue.
