The DTF Column
Why DTF is a winning strategy for college football kits
Laura Vodden at the YES Group takes a look at why direct to film printing is a winning strategy for printing college football kits.
W
hen it comes to college football kits, the demands on print quality, durability,
and turnaround speed are higher than ever. These aren’t just uniforms, they’re a visual identity, a marketing tool, and a source of pride for players and fans alike. But printing or applying custom designs on college football kits presents unique challenges, primarily due to the synthetic materials used in these garments. Direct to film printing offers a versatile solution, but achieving optimal results on polyester-rich fabrics requires careful adjustments to the printing process.
Understanding the challenges College football kits are predominantly made from polyester and polyester blends, chosen for their durability, moisture resistant properties, and flexibility. However, these same characteristics can complicate the DTF printing process: • Heat sensitivity: Polyester is prone to heat-related issues such as scorching or discolouration when exposed to high temperatures during the transfer process.
• Adhesion difficulties: Achieving strong adhesion of the DTF transfer to polyester can be problematic, leading to issues like peeling or incomplete transfers.
• Fine detail reproduction: Transferring intricate designs or fine text onto polyester may result in loss of detail or clarity.
• Loss of colour: Because often college kits are bright with contrasting dark colours in the fabric it can be very difficult to cover that with a lighter colour design and to achieve a consistent colour print over the fabric.
Optimising DTF printing for polyester football kits
To address these challenges here is some advice from us at the YES Group on how you can achieve perfect DTF prints on college football kits: 1) Temperature and pressing time: Lowering the heat press temperature and reducing pressing time can prevent

fabric scorching and discolouration. For polyester, lower temperatures with slower presses are often effective.
2) Ink volume and print speed: Adjusting the ink volume and print speed can enhance print quality on polyester. Reducing ink saturation helps prevent bleeding and ensures sharper images. Slowing down the print speed allows for better ink deposition and curing.
3) Adhesive powder selection: Using a fine-grain adhesive powder can improve adhesion. Finer powders provide a smoother application, enhancing the bond between the transfer and the fabric.
4) Pre-pressing the garment:
Pre-pressing the polyester garment for a few seconds before applying the transfer can remove excess moisture and wrinkles, resulting in a smoother surface for better adhesion.
5) Peeling technique: The choice between hot peel and cold peel methods can affect the transfer quality. Some practitioners have found success with warm peeling, allowing the transfer to cool slightly before peeling, to achieve cleaner results.
Extra tips • Testing and calibration: When working with polyester-rich sportswear, no two batches of garments are exactly the same. Differences in weave, colour,
stretch, and surface finish can all impact how a DTF transfer behaves. That’s why regular testing is vital. Before committing to a full production run, it’s best practice to test your transfer on a sample garment from the same batch.
In addition to physical testing, it’s important to calibrate your equipment settings for each job. Heat press temperature, pressure, dwell time, print resolution, and ink volume should all be tailored to suit the specific characteristics of the fabric you’re working with. • Quality materials: The quality of your DTF film, ink, and adhesive powder plays a significant role in the appearance, durability, and feel of the final print. Low- grade materials may result in inconsistent adhesion, dull colours, or prints that crack or peel after a few washes.
• Training and expertise: DTF printing may be more accessible than traditional methods, but that doesn’t mean it’s foolproof. Well-trained operators make a significant difference to the final product. From adjusting artwork for optimal print quality to correctly setting up the press and handling films with care, there are many small details that affect the final result. By implementing these adjustments, you can effectively use DTF printing on polyester-based college football kits, achieving vibrant, durable, and professional-quality designs.
