On-page SEO strategies for garment decorators

Do the three letters SEO fill you with dread? Fear no more! Colin Sinclair McDermott aka The Online Print Coach, explains why and how you should be using SEO.

S

earch engine optimisation (SEO) should be critical to every garment decorator’s marketing strategy. Who doesn’t want a steady stream of fresh leads coming into their business that doesn’t cost a penny?

Ultimately, in this month’s article, I want to help you get your website higher in the search results when people look for your services. I want more people to find you online. More traffic to your website essentially means more customers.

Relevant and helpful content First of all, you’ll probably need to make some changes to your website to ensure search engines like Google better understand what you do. You want to make sure the content on your pages is relevant and helpful to your audience. Make sure each of your pages is given a title and description that match what people are searching for and also that your headings within each of your pages tie in with what people are likely to be searching for. It also helps to keep your URLs nice and simple too and relevant to the content on that page. Google looks at a few things to decide where to rank your website. It takes into consideration the words you use. Are you using words that your ideal clients are searching for? Is the quality of your content helpful? Are you answering the questions that your ideal customers have? Also, with more people than ever searching on their mobile devices, you want to make sure your website is mobile-friendly. Finding the right keywords for your business is key. These are the words and phrases people type into Google when searching for something. Having customer avatars or buying personas as I mentioned in one of my previous articles goes a long way to helping you in this process. You need to think like this customer and understand what they might be looking for. E.g. ‘hoodie printing’ or ‘embroidered beanie hats’. There are some great free tools you can use to help you with this research like Google

Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest. It’s important to focus on what your ideal customers need and what process in the buying journey they are at. Are they simply looking for information just now or are they ready to buy? Once you’ve decided on the keywords you want to use for each page, build them into your page titles, in your page descriptions, and as mentioned, in your headings.

Use internal links

Another thing you can do to help boost your search results and conversions is connect your pages with internal links. This is when you link one page on your website with another.

This helps Google understand the structure of your website and which pages are most important to the thing that client is potentially searching for.

Let me give you an example. Imagine you’ve created a blog article targeting tradespeople, talking about the advantages of branded workwear. Let’s say you want to target embroidered polo shirts, hoodies and beanie hats. You’ll want to talk about how build trust and credibility with their clients and can often create reassurances they are dealing with a more reputable tradesperson. It’s also great for brand awareness. In

this article, you’ll want to internally link keywords such as polo shirts, hoodies, and beanie hats back to their respective pages on your site where clients can order or ask for a price. Not only does this help Google understand your website, but it also helps your prospective new customers. It’s important to check your progress on these efforts. Is your website traffic growing? Which pages are doing better and where do you need to make improvements? Are you getting more enquiries and orders?

Start seeing results

This isn’t necessarily a quick fix and can often take time before you start seeing results but by making it a part of your ongoing marketing strategy, you’ll hopefully start to reap the rewards before too long. Start optimising your website today. Go away and do a keyword audit and find the right words your customers are searching for. Update your content and make sure your product pages include these keywords. Work on those internal links and don’t forget to track your progress. Following these simple steps will help your website get found by more potential customers and in turn, lead to more sales for your business.
