Next Generation of Dark Rides – Simtec’s HEXaPOT®
D
ark rides have been around as long as theme parks have. They play a key role in creating unique experiences that take visitors through a carefully choreographed story. Their history begins in the early 19th century, with popular attraction types like Tunnels of Love, Ghost Train and Scenic Railways. Several World's Expositions also effectively utilized this format in their pavilions. Some of these served as the foundation for the early rides at Disneyland. The development of increasingly advanced media technology in recent years has led to a greater blend of three-dimensional scenery with perfectly synchronized projections or, more recently, large-format LED set extensions. At the same time, the demands placed on the motion system have become even more complex. What began as a simple, constantly moving so-called Omnimover at Disneyland has evolved into sophisticated, highly dynamic systems in today's attractions, often including motion bases to enhance excitement. But what should be considered when choosing a ride system, and how do the technologies differ? In addition to basic important parameters like vehicle size and dispatch time, which mainly determine capacity as a key factor, many other aspects influence both the creative vision and the budget.
Although some modern dark ride systems do not require tracks, this is not always the best choice.

High levels of dynamic motion are often only achievable with tracks. Trackless rides also tend to have greater distances to the scenery and require a larger, flat, empty floor space. However, they allow for more flexible choreography.
When assessing costs, several factors should be considered that might not be immediately obvious. For example, the type of restraint system impacts boarding times and staffing needs during operation, which directly affects capacity and operational costs. Energy consumption and expected maintenance expenses should also be included in the total cost of ownership.
The safety of the system and compliance with all regulations are paramount. Choosing e.g. the right sensor technologies and ensuring safe, continuous different systems vary greatly. When it comes to
