Patrick Lamb - Severn Lamb & Trams International
Park World’s Matt Broughton spoke with Severn Lamb & Trams International’s Managing Director, Patrick Lamb, about being one of the industry’s best kept secrets… since 1947!
Matt: Patrick, for those not in the know, can you give us an elevator pitch for Severn Lamb? Patrick: Severn Lamb is a specialist engineering company that designs and supplies visitor transportation systems for amusement parks, leisure attractions and municipalities around the world. We are best known for our narrow-gauge park trains, but our portfolio
also includes road trains, trams, tracked trolleys and fully bespoke turnkey transport solutions. Founded in 1947, we have built a reputation for engineering quality and
longevity, with many systems supplied decades ago still operating today. At our core, we solve complex transport challenges where reliability, creativity and guest experience are equally critical.
Matt: Patrick: and the experience that brings to every new challenge. designed to navigate extremely tight clearances, steep 20% gradients for a 45-minute underground cave tour - to a unique battery-electric park train around 1950s oil trucks.
tracked trolleys for retail destinations, and ultra-light rail systems providing critical infrastructure links between towns and industry. Each project brings new challenges to solve, while benefiting from lessons learned on previous programmes. That accumulated experience underpins the quality we deliver across the full project lifecycle.
Matt: What are you personally responsible for on a day-to-day basis now? Patrick: As Managing Director, my focus is on setting the overall strategy and direction of the business, while actively supporting our sales and marketing activities. A significant part of my time is spent identifying new opportunities,
partnerships and technologies that will help shape the next generation of transport systems. I also work closely with clients and partners around the world to understand their requirements and develop solutions that work operationally, creatively, technically and commercially. Travel is an inherent part of the role - visiting installations, meeting clients
and attending industry exhibitions - which provides invaluable insight into how our systems perform in real-world environments.
Matt: the biggest changes the company has seen in its time? Patrick: Severn Lamb has been led by three generations of the Lamb family, each shaping the business through very different eras. Our early days were driven by the model-making passion of Peter Severn
Lamb, who incorporated the company in 1958. This evolved into miniature passenger-carrying railways under my father, Michael Severn Lamb, providing the springboard for future growth. During the 1980s and 1990s, projects increased significantly in scale and
complexity. Our trains grew from 3½-inch gauge to 3-foot gauge for clients such as Disneyland Paris and PortAventura, alongside the introduction of road trains and light urban transport systems. Today, we continue to build on that legacy while adapting our people, products and processes to reflect an ever-changing world.
