ROUND UP Safe? Safeguarding the vulnerable isn’t a game, and
it certainly isn’t mere bureaucracy. We hope this tool can help you and your team best help the young people in your care.
Safe? is a Youthscape resource, produced in
collaboration with the safeguarding specialist charity thirtyone:eight, which helps individuals, organisations, charities, faith and community groups to protect the vulnerable from abuse. Youthscape is a national youth charity with 25
years of experience in delivering innovative and professional youth work, training and resources that serve young people and pursue positive transformation in their lives.
Y
ou know safeguarding is vital, but wisely practising it can be tough. Would your staff
team know how to spot abuse if it was happening? What counts as risk, and how do you know
when to speak up or stay quiet? Who should you tell anyway? Safe? is a new resource for anyone working
with teenagers – whether professionals or volunteers – designed to help you recognise signs of various types of abuse or safeguarding risk by working through hypothetical case studies in a group. Safe? builds a randomly generated case study
for a fictional young person. As the case study grows, working through various information cards, you’ll be deciding whether or not this young person is a safeguarding concern, and how you’d respond. Is it a situation to simply observe, to find out more, or to take action and contact emergency services? It’s an ideal refresher for those who’ve already
completed safeguarding training and need to remind themselves what to look out for, and it’s a great way to get teams discussing safeguarding issues without having to talk about sensitive real- life cases. Safeguarding can be an intimidating and frustrating area to understand – or to help others understand; this simple, accessible tool is designed to demystify the issue and promote clarity across a working team. It’s intended for teams or small groups of
colleagues to use together, ideally in groups of 2- 4. You’ll be exploring questions like: How would you observe that characteristic in a young person? What causes or situations might you expect to be behind these behaviours? Would your response change if it was a younger or older person, or someone of a different gender?

Together you’ll study the different types of risk
that can face young people and how to spot their clear or more subtle indicators. You’ll better understand the four main categories of abuse – physical, emotional, sexual and neglect – as well as the challenges of domestic, online and spiritual abuse. Safe? is all about noticing signs of abuse in the
things you observe about young people so you’ll find lots of symptoms and behaviours here, and less about disclosures. Of course real life is much more complicated but Safe? can help you spot these things in your interactions with young people should they occur.
