National Online Safety: Time to upskill your whole school


community in internet safety Equipping staff, parents and children with the knowledge they need to navigate and mitigate online safeguarding risks, now lies firmly at the heart of child safeguarding in the UK. It’s an inescapable fact of modern life, that online activity is interwoven in many aspects of child protection, from the prevention of child exploitation, to the tackling of bullying. James Southworth, Co-Founder of National Online Safety, said: “Our


research with UK primary and secondary schools has highlighted some worrying statistics regarding school staff’s knowledge and understanding of their pupils’ online activity. Schools are being urged to do more to prepare children for the so-called social media ‘cliff edge’ as they transition from primary to secondary school, but we believe that schools need more external support to provide effective online safety support for their pupils.”


From our survey conducted amongst over 500 primary school leaders, computing leads and teaching staff: • Only 49% feel confident in their knowledge of their children’s internet usage and what services they use.


• Whilst 93% of Primary School teachers are worried that their pupils are at risk using social media, a staggering 77% admitted that their pupils know more about social media than they do.


• 68% said that they struggle to engage parents in online safety.


From our survey conducted amongst 400 parents of children aged 1 to 15: • 58% of parents surveyed said that they had never received online safety training from their child’s school.


• 42% said that their children have better digital skills than they do. • 77% believe it is both theirs and the school’s responsibility to keep their children safe on the internet


So, what can schools do to help keep children safe online and align with the


revised DfE guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ which came into effect on 3rd September 2018?


1. Take a whole school community approach to online safety You can’t do this alone. Every leader, staff member and parent/carer needs to be on board and trained in online safety risks, how to spot them and how they should escalate an online safeguarding issue. This is compulsory.


2. Make online safety lessons fun Children need to be engaged in their online safety lessons and the online topics need to be on trend. Keep up!


3. Provide regularly updated online safety training The online world is changing rapidly and training one day a year is simply not enough to protect children. New threats emerge daily so it's imperative that all school staff are updated as often as the online world develops. Keeping up-to- date with the latest apps and games is imperative as new risks are posed every day.


To help schools bridge the knowledge gap between their ‘trusted adults’


and their children, National Online Safety has developed a whole school community approach to online safety training, offering practical ways for schools to effectively safeguard staff and pupils from the dangers of the online world. The NOS Certified School Community programme has been developed in line with the statutory duties outlined in the revised ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ guidance which came into effect on 3rd September 2018.
