Bett 2019: a community of practitioners T

he time of year is fast approaching when the global edtech community will gather

at the ExCeL in London, celebrating technology and innovation in education. The need for teachers and learners to adapt is crucial, as the Fourth Industrial Revolution continues apace. Many of this years’ speakers will be seeking to address these challenges, as well as inspiring teachers from early years to HE, from across the globe. Beyond being a trade event, Bett is equally a

community of practitioners, innovators and pioneers. The show stands as the forum for discussion, exchange and evaluation of new technologies. Teachers get the most from their time at the event through open exchange around how best to help leaners achieve their full potential. Here are some of the speaker and session highlights for this year’s show:

Day 1 Anthony Salcito, vice-president of worldwide education at Microsoft, will explore emotion and cognition in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Addressing the uncertain world that young people will find themselves in the coming decades, Anthony will emphasise how AI will be a central feature of the future. His session will examine how work, education and training will be significantly altered by AI. In order to adapt to

this new world, we will need to consider emotional intelligence and wellbeing, if we are to thrive alongside machine intelligence. His presentation will explore emotional learning

through an evidence-based approach – already adopted across the world in more than 1500 schools. Anthony will be accompanied by Barbara Holzapfel, Microsoft’s general manager of education marketing, and Dr. Marc Brackett, founding director of the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence at Yale University.

Allen Tsui, Academic Enrichment Programme Leader at Willow Brook Primary School Academy, will focus on the impact of computing and learning opportunities on attainment. He will explore how the school was transformed from requiring improvement, to being accredited as a computing and STEM based learning Centre of Excellence. As a firm believer in STEAM learning, Allen will shed light on Willow Brook Primary’s successes. Key to this was organising and resourcing the school so that all pupils have access to the IT curriculum. But the talk will also be forward looking, discussing how this school’s successes can be sustained in a post-primary context, helping learners become digitally literate citizens.

Joel Hellermark, CEO and founder of AI innovator Sana Labs, will be presenting a session

on personalising education at scale with AI. His talk will cover cutting-edge developments in AI that are helping students internalise curriculum content in shorter periods of time. He will also be discussing how in classroom settings AI-based interventions can support teachers to inspire all learners, moving towards truly personalised learning at scale.

Mitchel Resnick, LEGO Professor of Learning

Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab will be hosting a talk on Lifelong Kindergarten, and how to cultivate creativity through projects, passion, peers and play. Today's kindergartens are increasingly filling

out maths worksheets and working with phonics flash cards. But Mitchel will argue for exactly the reverse approach: that the rest of school and adult life should be more like kindergarten. The session will explain why kindergarten-style learning is ideally suited to the needs of today's society, and will present based on the “Four P's” of creative learning: Projects, Passion, Peers, and Play.

Day 2 Professor Rose Luckin, professor of learner centred design at London’s UCL Knowledge Lab, will be hosting a session on how to make technology work for schools. Looking at the
