Highlights from the UK education sector 13 VIEWS

With author Sal McKeown, and Patrick Hayes, Director at BESA

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today, and Happy New Year! In late- breaking news at the time of writing, we have a new Education Secretary in Damian Hinds, former minister at the DWP. Mr Hinds’ elevation has come about as a result of Justine Greening’s departure from the post she took on 18 months ago, and his immediate priorities must be to continue the work of his predecessor, to deliver on her commitment that an extra £1.3bn of the education department's budget would be moved to schools, and to ensure that the education brief he has inherited offers stability and investment after years of upheaval. He also has the thorny issue of tuition fees and university funding to deal with, a task not helped by the resignation of Toby Young for some very ill-advised comments in the past.

Turning to the magazine, we have a bumper issue for you this month, with five features including two previews of Bett 2018, the UK’s largest educational technology show; a Feature Focus double header focusing on ed tech in the classroom; and a fascinating piece from Shirley Billage on managing cultural diversity in schools. We have our regular contributors as always offering insight and advice, as well as a great roster of commenters as usual sharing their thoughts on the world of education. Finally, we continue our section on UK education writers, “From the pen of…”, this month featuring well-known journalist and author Sal McKeown.

Remember, you can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. We love hearing from you!

Enjoy the issue! Jonathan Swift - Managing Editor
