Tell us about what you do and the pupils you work with

At Penpol School we believe that every child matters and have always been advocates about the role that happiness plays in education – we believe that children achieve great success when they are happy at school.

T

Over the past few years, our school has grown, and we now have around 370 children. Creativity is at the heart of our curriculum and our aim is to give all of our children the confidence to become life-long learners. We promote a culture of high achievement for all and prepare each child for their future by providing them with the opportunity to grow academically, socially, morally, culturally, and spiritually.

his month, Education Today speaks to Jacob Woolcock, a teacher at Penpol School in Hayle, Cornwall, about how using hands-on, computing resources from LEGO® Education has helped pupils to improve time management and resilience skills; vital when it comes to preparing them for success in their post-education careers.

When did you first hear about LEGO® Education resources?

I’ve always been a fan of LEGO and knew that there were education resources but hadn’t really ever considered it for use in the classroom until I went to Bett in early 2017.

At the show, my colleague and I took part in 16 www.education-today.co.uk

one of their science and computing teacher workshops focused around their primary resource, LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0, and realised not only how powerful it was, but also how simple it was for children to use. We jumped at the chance to invest in them and bought 17 sets so that we have one between two for most of our classes, which is great as they’re very popular.

What has the feedback from pupils been like?

Every single time they come into the Mac suite, no matter what my lesson plan is, at least four students will say ‘Mr Woolcock are we using LEGO today?’ so I think it’s safe to say that they really like it!

We use our WeDo 2.0 sets with our reception pupils right up to our year six classes. The children in key stage two have really got to grips with it and are very confident in working independently; they get into pairs, follow instructions and just get on with it.

LEGO as a brand is so familiar to them and is January 2018
