Highlights from the UK education sector 13 VIEWS

With author Matt Lloyd-Rose, and Patrick Hayes, Director at BESA

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today, our last for 2017, and it’s been an interesting year in the education sector, as always. With Brexit looming, concerns have been raised about its impact on further education. The university sector is currently in the middle of some awkward self-examination about the level of pay awards to senior university figures, while the primary and secondary sectors are in the middle of a funding crisis which has seen requests for voluntary donations from parents growing rapidly, and school headteachers travelling to Whitehall to argue the case for more money in real terms to help with the schooling of our children. As a prosperous and enlightened Western nation, surely our children deserve the best education we can give them, and it’s my view that government absolutely must fund schools appropriately. Turning to the magazine, we look ahead to Bett 2018, and focus on the importance of cultural education in schools. We have our regular contributors as always offering insight and advice, as well as a great roster of commenters as usual sharing their thoughts on the world of education. We continue our section on UK education writers, “From the pen of…”, this month featuring Matt Lloyd-Rose. We continue our section on recruitment with some great jobs for you this month, so if you’re looking for a new role, or wish to advertise a vacancy, do make sure you get in touch.

Remember, you can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. We love hearing from you!

Enjoy the issue! Jonathan Swift - Managing Editor
