I’ve been told that I waffl e sometimes in this column, but as I once told my Uncle Peter when we’d been out walking for the day – I think it was somewhere near Haverhill in Suffolk, but it was quite a while ago so I may be remembering wrong; I can’t really picture him anywhere other than there, or perhaps Ludlow, but I think Ludlow was too recent, so it’s probably Suffolk, but there’s nothing in the memory that really screams SUFFOLK, so I guess there ‘where’ is really not so important – anyway, we’d been out and about, doing uncle-nephew kind of things, gadding about. I think it was a warm summer day, typical of the British summer, when the sun shines brightly, briefl y, and it adds a smile to everyone’s faces. Fish and chips for dinner, hard earned after walking many miles, eaten sitting on a wall somewhere close to the chip shop, maybe with some mushy peas on; these are the kind of memories that make up so many childhoods in the UK in the late 1970s and early 1980s. We sat and talked, shooting the shit, talking about this and that. Realistically, it was one of those conversations adults and children have, the child babbling away, the adult trying really hard to remember what it was like being a kid and to relate to the chatter. The kid just loving being there and being heard, enjoying the company of an adult in safety and security. The world was very different then, but human relationships remain the same – we all appreciate being heard, and we all appreciate the right kind of contact at the right time. So anyway, I said to my uncle in a rare fl ash of prescience for my very young self, I said, “I’ll see you at ICE 2022 in London, then.”
