It’s becoming clear that funding- hungry US states have been spending money they don’t have – as a result of freshly-legal sports betting not flying nearly as high as was hoped. Budgets were set with an assumption of the amount of tax coming government’s way, and in some cases the shortfall is massive. In other cases, local government has assessed potential tax erroneously and the shortfall is a result of serious misunderstanding, so reports say. Some things leap to mind, in all of this. Why has

sports betting not taken off in quite the way it was suggested? It has in some states – it has been posited that New Jersey is an exception because it allows mobile and online betting, which many states don’t. Why don’t they, then? What are they afraid of? Success? Or is it the power of incumbent casino operators that want to add the sportsbook solely to their bricks-and-mortar sites? Gaming has often, globally, followed a set of rules

and regulations that have worked elsewhere; Vegas is still the standard from which many jurisdictions establish their ground rules, using the gambling capital as a template and adapting to suit their locale. So why not look at what is working in New Jersey? The end result could be that, for example, your schools are fully funded – which makes everyone a winner. Tennessee has agreed to mobile-only sports betting in the state; what an acid test that will be for sports betting’s future. We watch with bated breath.
