Editor’s comment
With the government reviews presently happening in the UK, there is an air of nervousness. Recently, the head of the UK industry body the Betting and Gaming Council was engaged in a spat on Twitter with a recovering gambling addict, and it wasn’t pretty, nor was it necessary. The industry could take away the stick we are routinely beaten with in one move – by owning problem gambling. By this I mean not just funding programs in a small way. I mean by saying hey, let’s fully research this, let’s fi nd out as much as we can about it, and let’s act – because that way you can pre-empt regulatory changes, because those changes are so often made by bodies that have little or no knowledge of the industry or how it works. So why shouldn’t we take as much control of them as we possibly can? To do that, we have to own the entire space, for all of its good and all of its bad. Then we can be the driver for meaningful change, and that stick we are so often beaten with can be dropped. It’s just a thought. Maybe I’m tired. In other news, vaccines! Yay! Stay safe.
