INDUSTRY UPDATE THE TILE ASSOCIATION COLUMN THE BMA COLUMN

TTA urges fixers to sign up for training assessments

funding available right now. This is an opportunity which should not be missed, as an NVQ Level 2 is now required in order to get a CSCS card. This is open to all fixers, whether they are TTA members or not. EWPAR (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment) is a one-day assessment aimed at experienced tilers, who for whatever reason do not have an NVQ Level 2. These assessments are carried out at an approved training centre. An OSAT (On-Site Assessment & Training) is more suitable for those

T

fixers who are new into the industry, have less experience and who require an element of training, as well as assessment. These are carried out on site at the trainee’s place of work and generally last two to three days. Training by either of the two routes leads to an NVQ Level 2, which is

required by all fixers in order to get a CSCS card. Although a CSCS card is not required by law, most principal contractors and housebuilders require construction workers on their sites to have a valid card. Contractors are also becoming more rigorous in checking that workers on their sites hold the correct card. The CITB funding received means that TTA is able to offer these assessments at a much reduced rate, and furthermore TTA members are eligible for a further substantial discount on the cost. TTA has funding for 100 places to be used by January. The funding can be put towards either a EWPAR or OSAT assessment. Both of these lead to the NVQ. The EWPAR assessment costs £500+VAT for TTA members - £600+VAT for non-members plus a £71 registration fee. TTA members pay £650+ VAT for the OSAT, while non-members pay £750+VAT, in addition to the registration fee. OSAT assessments will also incur travel expenses, which should be paid direct to the assessor. Contact TTA for more information on 0300 365 8453 or by emailing training@tile.org.uk

BMA winning recovery fight S

uppliers are recovering well after lockdown according to the Bathroom Manufacturers Association. Following

unprecedented falls in sales during March and April, suppliers have seen a gradual increase in demand as restrictions have gradually eased. Now BMA members’ consolidated sales are close to ordinary levels, the trade body reports, with some companies even posting a record month in July. The news reflects wider optimism throughout the repair, maintenance,

and improvement market. Last month, a BMA/Opinium poll revealed that nearly a third of UK adults are likely to undertake a partial or full bathroom refurbishment in the next 12 months. Meanwhile some tradespeople have been boosted by the Government’s Green Homes Grant and stamp duty measures have stimulated the housing market to have its busiest month in a decade.

Tom Reynolds, Chief Executive of the BMA, welcomed the news that members are winning the recovery fight: “When sales levels plummeted at the start of lockdown it looked like 2020 was going to be a catastrophic year for the sector, so it is great to see such a strong bounce back. BMA’s member companies have proved incredibly resilient and are well placed to make the most of the current optimism.” However, Reynolds also warned about several downside risks for the

industry: “This should in no way dampen current optimism, but there are a

number of risks we still need to keep in mind. Local lockdowns, second spikes, and a messy end to the Brexit transition period could all scupper our recovery. So, in short, the industry still needs the support of Government to secure a solid recovery.”
