Allowing for displacement a 120-litre bath requires 3.84 kWh to heat up to 40C, with water costing around 17p. This, plus the cost of heating the water, can vary between 28p (gas) and £1.09 (electric), making the overall cost for a bath between 45p and £1.26. A 10 minute, 38C shower could use up to 150 litres of water, requiring 5.76 kWh of energy to heat. Thermostatic showers can cost £1.48 per week, whereas electric showers averaging 10.5 kWh can cost UK households up to £3.07 a week, giving a cost between 69p and £1.88 per use. The calculations above are approximates and will vary depending on personal preferences. However, with bathing offering additional benefits, such as relaxation and helping warm your body, you can see why we believe every home should have a bath in these austere times!
