INDUSTRY UPDATE

Knightsbridge’s smart range helps beat the cost-of-living crisis

With recent increases in energy costs, consumers are under intense pressure to save money and one major drain on budgets is ‘vampire appliances’, consuming power even when not in use. Smart technology may cut expenses in respect of these appliances, and Knightsbridge offers a comprehensive variety of app-controlled accessories that help better manage energy-burning equipment. Central to the range are two 13A, 2-gang, smart switched sockets that can

be controlled remotely or by voice. The sockets have a power monitoring function that displays live power usage in kWh and a green LED that indicates which gang is in use. For outdoors, there is an IP66, 2-gang switched socket with a range of up to 40m depending on Wi-Fi coverage.

BiKBBI –Moving the goalposts O

ften a negative connotation, ‘moving the goalposts’ is usually used to express frustration at the change of an

aim or an objective, but it doesn’t mean it’s always a bad thing. Sticking with an original plan, regardless of the changing environment,

runs the risk of missing opportunities and even losing out completely – never was this more true than during the last two years, as the whole world navigated unchartered territory. But as we reflect on how our lives changed in that period, there really are some positives that we can take forward. For example, we are far better at evaluation, adaptation and change than

we ever were, as the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic subsides, to revert to our old ways would be a travesty. To coin a phrase; if we go back to doing what we always did, we will only get what we always got. I’m confident that every one of us can think of at least one thing we do

differently now, and somewhere in the process, there will be a digital solution. Technology continues to revolutionise our lives and has most definitely accelerated the shift to a digital world since March 2020. With so much success, it’s a wonder why some industries and businesses still feel there is no place for them online. At the British Institute of KBB Installation, we have always embraced the

digital world but until this recent digital acceleration, we were wary about how our stakeholders would react if we went too far too soon. For instance, we had intentions to launch a mobile app for some time, as we believed this would revolutionise how we communicate with our audiences but were concerned that too many of our members were still technophobes who would see an app as a barrier rather than progression. Fast-forward two years and we were having daily conversations with KBB installers who are running their businesses through their smartphones – from accounting software applications to customer relationship management via their social media platforms. Suddenly, SMEs across the world had ‘moved the goalposts’ and adapted in order to keep their businesses operational. So, we moved our goalposts too, prioritising the introduction the BiKBBI

mobile app which launched in June 2022 and, to quote one of our members, Liam Dean of Dean Carpentry, it’s already proving to be a ‘gamechanger’. How we communicate, and more importantly, on what platform is

critical for any business, especially considering how consumers make their purchasing decisions. Once upon a time people used the internet to access information, today digital platforms are critical engagement tools for business and industry.
