BMA – Solving the inter-connected environmental crises S
ustainable innovation is critical for the home, and especially in the bathroom. This message came over loud and clear at our
recent BMA Conference in Carden Park, where 150 delegates heard from leading scientist, Melissa Sterry on the ground-breaking projects developing the interiors of the future. From water saving and recycling, to circular
design of materials and fixtures, there are many steps we can consider when designing, manufacturing and installing bathroom products. Melissa explained humanity is facing a massive
upheaval to change our lifestyles, homes and businesses to combat the many and inter- connected environmental crises.
She presented a pioneering project, growing
organic pieces of furniture, known as the ‘furniture orchard’, and challenged the audience to think about how innovations like this may be integrated into future business plans. Being able to see things from a different
perspective and explore new ideas is so valuable. Our sector is responding and adapting to the
sustainability challenge, both in terms of the reducing domestic water consumption and becoming Net Zero businesses. That is precisely why we picked the ‘Sustainability of the Sector’ theme for this year’s two-day conference at Carden Park. Combining experiences from different
professional worlds, and encouraging different ways of thinking, is crucial to move forward. This approach of exchanging ideas was
highlighted by another of our conference speakers, Scrapheap Challenge presenter, Robert Lewellyn. He enlightened us with stories of the adoption of electric vehicles in other European countries and challenged us to learn from other businesses sectors in the quest to save the planet. The personal challenges of adaption were
covered by the keynote speakers, John Hotowka who outlined strategies to improve our colleagues mental well-being and build their resilience to change. My main take away from the event was that we
must celebrate all successes and spread the word about sustainable bathrooms to consumers. We need a sea-change in the way we talk about water and energy efficiency to educate everyone on the ways to make a difference.
