The UK Government has confirmed that classifications for fire doors will move from the British National Standards (BS) to European Standards (EN) classifications in September 2029. It’s an important development, but, crucially, not one that requires any immediate change in how you currently specify, order or install fire doors. We are already seeing growing demand for EN-classified
products, but in truth, there is no requirement to cease specifying BS-classified fire doors until the new framework takes effect. Doors tested to BS remain fully compliant, safe and approved for use in all projects until at least September 2029 – as long as they are installed before that date.
Why there’s no need to panic Both BS and EN testing utilise rigorous test regimes, and while there are many similarities between the BS and EN resistance to fire tests, there are subtle differences between the two which determine that EN is considered to be more stringent in some respects. However, these differences don’t suddenly make BS-tested products less safe. The BS testing regime has been well proven over decades, and continues to serve the industry well.
