PHAM NEWS | JULY/AUGUST 2026 Pipes, Fittings& Valves

Final touches that make for a professional installation

A neat fi nish can make a good installation look like a great one. Dean Heathfi eld at Talon Manufacturing explains why small, aff ordable fi nishing products can make such a visible diff erence.

H

omeowners rarely understand everything that goes into a well-planned plumbing or heating

installation, but they can see the fi nish. They will always notice the copper pipework under radiators and the rough edges around fl ues. They will spot ugly boiler pipework in the utility room and clips that look random and disorganised. Finishing products matter.

They are not expensive, diffi cult to fi t or likely to add much time to the job, but they can make installations look sharper, cleaner and more considered. A professional fi nish helps build trust. It gives the customer confi dence in the workmanship they cannot see, because the parts they can see have been fi nished properly.

Wall penetrations Wall penetrations are one of those details customers always seem to notice. A boiler fl ue or pipe may be installed correctly, but if the hole around it looks rough, the whole job can feel less polished. Traditional sealing methods such as mortar, expanding foam and silicone can do the job, but they can also look messy and can shrink,

crack, stain or weather over time. Internally, a poor fi nish around a pipe can stand out against painted walls or tiles. PipeSnug and FlueSnug are

designed to give installers a neater way to seal pipe and fl ue penetrations. They fi t directly into standard core-drilled openings, creating a clean, airtight seal around the pipework or fl ue without needing extra materials. There is also a compliance

benefi t. Airtightness is a key part of Part L, and products like PipeSnug and FlueSnug make it easy to meet regulations.

products matter - they can make installations look sharper, cleaner and more sophisticated

Clip it clean Pipe clips are easy to overlook. They are functional, low-cost and often treated as something that just needs to hold the pipe. But clips remain visible after the job is fi nished, especially in boiler cupboards, plant rooms, utility areas and exposed pipe runs. Our Hinged Clips give installers

a simple way to make visible pipework look organised. As well as standard white, Hinged Clips are available in colours including black, brown, grey, gold and chrome-eff ect fi nishes. That allows clips to blend with exposed pipework and match decorative fi ttings. For services that need to be

clearly identifi ed, we also off er identifi cation clips for hot water, cold water and gas. Used well, these can make a plant area or boiler installation look extremely professional, showing the installer has thought about future servicing and fault fi nding.

Hide the copper Exposed copper pipework can let down an otherwise tidy installation. It may be clipped correctly and doing exactly what it should, but visually it can stand out for all the wrong reasons. Our Snappit pipe covers solve

the problem quickly. They clip directly over existing pipework to create a smooth, neat fi nish without the need for painting. They are designed to resist discolouration, chipping and fl aking, so the fi nish stays clean. For radiators and heated

towel rails, Snappit kits include pipe covers and collars, helping installers tidy the full visible area rather than leaving the last few inches of pipework exposed. Colour options including black, grey, chrome, white and rose gold also make it easier to match pipework with taps, towel rails, radiator fi nishes or room styling.

On the skirting In refurbishment work, surface- mounted pipework is often the

most practical option. Chasing into walls or lifting fl oors is not always possible, cost-eff ective or sensible. But visible pipework can make a fi nished room feel cluttered and untidy. Talon’s pipe covers conceal surface-mounted pipework both indoors and out but still allow access when needed. They are also compatible with

our Hinged Clip range, so they can be fi tted over existing fi xings without specialist tools. That makes them suitable for both planned installations and jobs where pipework has already been clipped. For longer runs at skirting

level, Talon’s over-skirting and direct-to-wall skirting covers help create a more complete fi nish across a room. Pipe covers can also connect directly into skirting systems, giving installers a continuous fi nish rather than a mix of exposed sections, awkward joins and visible clips.

Finish the boiler area Boilers and fl ue runs are often installed in visible spaces, including kitchens, utility rooms and airing cupboards. The pipework may be neat and fully compliant, but if it is all exposed, the area can still look unfi nished. Our Boiler Box Cover and

Boiler Flue Box Cover systems conceal pipework and fl ues while allowing access for servicing and maintenance. It has a white gloss fi nish and can be trimmed to suit individual installations. Boiler Flue Box Cover is a tidy solution for exposed fl ue pipework and designed to meet Gas Safe requirements. Most customers will not see

the care behind the pipe routing, sizing or commissioning. But they will see exposed pipework, clips, fl ue seals and the boiler area. It doesn’t mean appearance matters more than workmanship. It means appearance helps refl ect the workmanship. There are plenty of fi nishing touches that are simple, aff ordable additions which lift the fi nal result and help installers leave behind a fi nish customers would recommend. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/726/67
