EDITOR’S OPINION
Knowledge is power Chris Jones
Managing editor of Energy in Buildings & Industry
O
bservant readers might note that there is a new face gazing out from this page as a result of my taking over
the editorsh ip following the well- earned retirement of my predecessor, Mark Thrower. Over the years, Mark has succeeded in establishing this publication as a reliable source of information for some of the most powerful and influential decision makers in energy management and I will of course endeavour to ensure that remains the case for future editions. Concerns about climate change, security of supply and rising costs have all helped to drive the subject of energy up the political agenda, as well as raising the importance of energy efficiency for corporate bodies and the wider public. And as the current government continues
to back-track on commitments to moving away from fossil-fuels to more sustainable solutions, energy policies look set to be a prominent battle-ground in the next General Election when we’re likely to see some contrasting differences of opinion on the level of funding allocated to eco schemes and renewable technologies. The resolution of such conflicting arguments will impact on short-term business investment decisions and also have long-term consequences for generations to come.

When it comes to making energy savings, knowledge is power and recent advances in monitoring and metering technology have played a significant role in helping both businesses and domestic customers to review their consumption and adapt behaviours. In this month’s issue (see pages 29 – 31) we highlight how some of the latest software tools and management systems can provide the necessary data to help identify where improvements can be made and practical steps taken to reduce both greenhouse emissions and energy bills. On the subject of being informed, if you’re a regular reader of Energy in Buildings & Industry you probably already recognise the importance of keeping up to speed with technical developments and legislation changes. The fast moving and increasingly influential energy sector deserves a publication that provides some essential enlightenment and we will continue to do our best to fulfil that role. If you have any views on content or want to share some news or opinions on the state of the industry, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
