Ammonia system cuts energy use and carbon at Pilgrim
Demeva Refrigeration Limited has installed a high-efficiency BITZER ammonia refrigeration system at Pilgrim UK’s meat processing facility in Bromborough, Wirral. A key target for the project was to achieve payback on investment within one to one- and-a-half years, and this was achieved as a result of the significant energy savings. The previous cooling system cost £146,000 per year, while the new Bitzer ACP pack is estimated to cost £61,000 per year, saving over £80,000 annually and reducing running costs by nearly 60%. The system includes a 707kW Bitzer Ammonia Compressor Pack powered by high-performance screw compressors, to replace an end-of-life ammonia system by another manufacturer that had been in service for 20 years. The existing ammonia charge was retained for use in the new system. The ACP system provides primary
cooling at an evaporating temperature of -9°C for the facility’s secondary glycol circuit, servicing cold stores at 2°C and air handling units at 8°C. The project was part of a broader energy efficiency program

Urban development incorporates customisable HVAC
at the site, which included replacing gas boilers with heat pumps and completing the transition to LED lighting across its sites. Bitzer’s ACP range is designed for
high-efficiency cooling in industrial applications and uses a zero Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant. The system offers resilience with a backup compressor and rapid commissioning due to its plug-and-play design. It also features compact screw compressors, variable speed drive control, and longer maintenance intervals compared to reciprocating compressors. The project is part of a multi-million
pound investment programme by Pilgrim UK to further enhance the sustainability of its operations, with the aim of achieving
net zero by 2030. ■

In the first phase of the Oval Village residential development in south London, 700 CIAT Comfort Line fan coil units (FCUs) have been installed. The development, led by Berkeley Homes Central London, includes 1,332 new homes across seven residential buildings, along with a new Tesco, more than 15,000m2 of community, commercial, office and retail space in the London Borough of Lambeth. The CIAT Comfort Line FCUs integrate
the latest technology, providing summer and winter comfort for occupants of the new and renovated buildings. The units are equipped with Epure air purification technology, ensuring excellent indoor air quality with a PM2.5 particulate concentration, below the limit recommended by the World Health Organization (10 µg/m3). The company provided bespoke
solutions for this project, including a customised folding filter due to the size of access panels in the residential properties, and extended drain trays to accommodate the larger valve
arrangements specified for the project. This ensures no condensation damages the ceiling via the enclosed ceiling void. The FCUs feature high energy efficiency
variable speed fan motors and adhere to EuroVent certification and PEP (Product Environmental Profile) ecopassport registration, demonstrating their technical performance and environmental sustainability. “We chose the CIAT units because they
could support the simple control method specified,” says Cameron Malcolm, MD of Malcolm Building Services. “They redesigned the units to accommodate collapsible filters to assist with small access hatches, as well as extended drain trays. CIAT’s Comfort Line is a good solution for customers seeking solutions that meet the latest requirements for comfort, energy optimisation and indoor
air quality.” ■
