LARGE SHELL BOILERS & HEAT RECOVERY STEAM GENERATORS
Babcock Wanson UK has extended its portfolio to encompass: large high pressure firetube boilers up to 50barg and output to 70 t/h; and watertube boilers up to 90barg and 150t/h; along with heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs). The addition of large- scale boiler systems
designed for the most demanding industrial applications has been brought about through the integration of German company VKK Standardkessel into the Babcock Wanson Group. The VKK product portfolio includes single and double flame watertube boilers, hot water boilers, high-pressure steam generators with or without superheaters, and HRSGs for combined heat and power applications. The Condor range combines watertube and firetube technology to deliver high pressure, low emissions and superheated steam from a compact, highly efficient design. Capacities range from two to 70 tonnes of steam per hour, with operating pressures up to 38 bar and steam temperatures up to 450˚C, while hot water boilers can be supplied up to 50 MW and 30 bar. The Condor range is also available for electrical and hybrid operation. Hybrid Condor boilers incorporate flanged electric
heaters alongside traditional combustion to reduce CO2 emissions. VKK’s full-electric Condor boilers are available up to 11 MW, offering more than 99% efficiency and a practical route to zero-emission steam and hot water. According to the company, VKK HRSGs provide an effective
solution for utilising waste heat from gas turbines, CHP plants and industrial processes, ensuring both improved energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

AIR-TO-AIR HEAT PUMP RANGE OFFERS NEXT-GENERATION HEATING & COOLING
Next-generation models have been added to Hitachi Cooling & Heating’s airHome air-to-air heat pump range. airHome Multi Pro is a flexible multi-split air-to-air heat pump system for residential and commercial environments. With capacities ranging from 3.6 to 10 kW, a single outdoor unit can support up to five indoor units – offering scalable comfort across various spaces, the company explains. This is said to offer exceptional energy performance, with guaranteed cooling rated up

Wanting to achieve sustainable heating and cooling for its office buildings, terminals and piers, Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands uses Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems which store thermal energy underground. New buildings are equipped with TES, and existing buildings are transitioning away from gas. A collective TES system was designed for the Schiphol Building (SHG),
Outlook 1 and 2, and Avioport. This required connecting heat pumps and dry coolers to the three buildings via underground pipes, with each building having its own heat pump station. However, a solution was needed for two nearby buildings without their own TES, with the Outlook office building still relying on gas-fired boilers and chillers. In preparation for the central TES project, a few years ago four Trane City RTSF heat pumps were installed. So, Trane was also selected for the Outlook’s
simultaneously provide heating and cooling in different parts of the building if desired. The old chillers in the parking basement were replaced by heat pumps, with existing gas boilers remaining on standby to assist if needed. At the end of January 2025 The Outlook office building switched to the renewed source system and its own heat pump solution. Thanks to the collective TES for three buildings, Schiphol saves approximately 625,000m3 of natural gas per year. The airport aims to have all of its buildings off the gas grid by 2030,
using thermal energy storage systems in new constructions and phasing out gas in existing premises.
