MANAGEMENT

Media director Paul Ryder

pryder@datateam.co.uk EDITORIAL IT’S ONLY BIKES AFTER ALL?

I heard that again recently, and it was a reminder to (when necessary) not take things too seriously. Easier said than done sometimes, right? When you think about why you started working in the industry, the reasons behind it, what comes to mind? Not to make light of serious business, of course. There’s a time and a place for that.

The cycling industry is more important than we often realise. Although it’s just bikes, the industry is responsible for contributing many economic, health and employment benefits across the UK. In earlier Bicycle Association (BA) research from 2024, it was reported that ‘the cycle industry (and cycling generally) currently contributes an estimated £7.5 billion in economic value per year. This includes £1.2 billion in direct economic benefits and tax, with a further £0.6 billion from cycle tourism, events, and infrastructure.’ Of course, it extends far beyond that. The list of benefits, I’m sure you’ll all be well aware

of, and I’m preaching to the choir in many ways. But, it’s nice to remind ourselves that what we do is more than just bikes. There are still uncertainties ahead, challenges to overcome and inevitable bumps in the

road, but as a community, the cycling industry is pretty close-knit at the best of times, perhaps more so in the worst. There are still areas of growth and more positive forecasting, with the BA predicting that this year will see further growth in PAC and services. Now that we’re over halfway through 2025, it’s time to look further ahead to what the rest of the year and into 2026 might look like.

But for now, looking at the July issue, we’ve got details on our upcoming awards in October (11), a chat with Pearson about the ideals that guide them (16), Mark Sutton explores the boom in bike share schemes (20), and Dominic Langan shares what he’s learned from 36 years in the bike industry. Plus, we have a column from Cycling UK (47), Dominic Loh and Adam Townsend (24),

Trevor Worsey from aereo (32), Mark Almond (51), and we also hear from Max Chuang from Topeak (36). As always, you can find sector guides on pages 54-66.
