SPOTLIGHT

DECLAN PAUL Declan Paul, Founder and Managing

Director at Inferno Studios on his passion for people, starting his own company, and why he wants to uplift new voices

How did it feel for you to be recognised by the games industry back in 2020? It felt incredible to be recognised at that point in my career - It affirmed the years of hard work and dedication I had poured into an industry I’m deeply passionate about and motivated me to push the boundaries of what I could achieve even further. It was truly an honour to feature alongside such a talented cohort!

How have things changed for you since then? 2020 feels like a lifetime ago, and a lot has certainly changed since then! Most notably, I took the leap to start my own studio at the end of last year - a decision that is allowing me to further my own growth and contributions towards our industry and the great people within it.

What was your motivation for starting Inferno Studios?

My motivation was to build a studio that truly places its people at its core. The name Inferno comes from the idea of bringing creative flames together to form a powerful force that is greater than the sum of its parts. I also wanted to focus my efforts on providing specialist services that were underserved in the games sector, such as real-time visual effects.

For me it’s about creating a space where we can really push the boundaries, both creatively and operationally, whilst supporting developers in ways that make a tangible difference to their projects and to the industry as a whole.

What has the team at Inferno Studios been up to since launching? Can you say? We’ve had a fantastic start since we launched in June, with some great partners trusting us with their projects out of the gate. Unfortunately, these projects are still under NDA, so there’s not too much I can say at this stage… We will be officially announcing our first partnership in January, kicking the new year off with a bang, so keep your eyes peeled for that in the coming weeks!

Is the industry doing enough to celebrate new voices? How could it be doing better? While good progress has been made over the years with more events, awards and initiatives celebrating emerging talent than ever before, there’s always more that can be done. I think this needs to start at a studio level, creating cultures that recognise and uplift new voices. I’m certainly looking at ways Inferno can contribute to this effort, as I believe supporting young and diverse talent benefits our industry as a whole. I urge others to do the same.
