The EU Deforestation Regulation: What it means for palm oil and the baking industry

he European Union’s Deforestation


Regulation


(EU DR) could be a landmark policy, as it aims to curb the environmental impact of deforestation. The regulation,


effective


at the end of this year, will significantly impact many sectors, including palm oil, which is crucial to the baking industry.


But while the EU DR is to be lauded for its ambition, it’s a huge undertaking - in a very small amount of time. In this feature, I’ll discuss what EU DR means for the baking industry in the UK and how industry leaders like KTC Edibles are navigating the regulatory landscape.


Sustainability and the EU deforestation regulation The EU Deforestation Regulation represents


a huge legislative milestone as part of the global efforts to combat deforestation. From December 30 2024 onwards, any business that imports, exports or sells in the EU will need to prove that the ingredients they use have come from land that has not been deforested since December 2020. The EU DR covers palm oil, soya, cocoa, coffee, cattle, rubber and wood products and aims to reduce carbon emissions by at least 32 million metric tonnes a year. This regulation is part of a larger sustainability framework that aligns with international commitments such as the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The well-intentioned aim of the EU DR is


to shift global supply chains towards more sustainable practices, encouraging producers to adopt deforestation-free methods and


enhancing transparency. the best intentions,


However, despite the complexities


and uncertainties around EU DR and its implementation are causing some serious challenges.


Impact on the baking industry Palm oil is an essential part of the UK baking industry. Palm oil is prized for its value and crop yield, enhancing texture, extending shelf life and providing a stable and neutral-tasting fat content. However, palm oil production has been a significant driver of deforestation, particularly in Southeast Asia.


This regulation incentivises the industry to invest in sustainable palm oil production, promoting practices that protect forests and biodiversity. The EU DR presents some significant challenges for the baking industry.
