CSM Group becomes strategic partner of the University of Gastronomic Sciences


CSM Group, experts in food ingredient research and innovation, has become a Strategic Partner of the Association of Friends of the University of Gastronomic Sciences (UNISG) in Pollenzo, Italy. UNISG, founded in 2004 by the Slow Food association with the Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna regions, is the first university to focus on food at a transdisciplinary level. This partnership brings CSM Group


and the Ingredient-Tech Platform into UNISG’s Strategic Partners’ Club, joining leading companies in food production, distribution, and consumption who share UNISG’s vision for sustainable growth and innovative food models. Aldo Uva, CEO of the Ingredient-Tech Platform, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasising the value of research and training in driving food sector evolution. Rinaldo Rava, Vice President of UNISG, highlighted the partnership’s potential to foster research and innovation, particularly


in developing plant-based and allergen- free ingredients. This collaboration aligns with UNISG’s goal of creating low-impact solutions for the food system. Initial joint projects will focus on


upcycling and circular economy initiatives in the ice cream and fruit sectors, and on marketing natural origin ingredients abroad. Michele

Coveris has been recognised by renowned UK cereal brand, Weetabix. Coveris received the prestigious Weetabix Supplier Innovation Award linked to its supply of cereal liners, Cereal+, at a supplier awards ceremony. The Weetabix Supplier Innovation Award recognises suppliers who have proactively delivered


ideas and opportunities for


continuous improvement and innovation. Coveris supplies Cereal+ liner manufactured at its specialist polyethylene extrusion site in Winsford, Cheshire, for Weetabix products including Alpen, Crunchy Bran and Weetabix Minis. Cereal+, made from fully recyclable polyethylene for bag- in-box packaging, is manufactured using co-extrusion technology to deliver packer performance, product protection, freshness, shelf life and consumer functionality. In a sustainability


project supporting aligning


environmental goals, Coveris Winsford worked with Weetabix to downgauge their cereal liners and reduce the amount of flexible film packaging by 10%. Prior to the switch and subsequently, there were challenges packing one specific Weetabix product line owing to the cereal properties. A collaborative review resulted in an innovative change to the Cereal+ formulation,


developed and validated by Coveris’ forward-thinking Film Science Lab, which not only resolved the challenges but achieved an immediate uplift in packing efficiency and productivity between 87% – 149%. Coveris recently announced an expansion of its


barrier films capabilities to produce vacuum skin packaging (VSP) for meat, fish and dairy sectors at its Winsford site. The expansion is supported by a multi- million pound investment including the opening of a dedicated manufacturing hall and installation of the latest VSP conversion equipment.
