ofi delivers nutritional boost to 100,000+ people in nuts supply chains
olam food ingredients (“ofi”) reached over 105,000 people in its cashew and hazelnut supply chains with health and nutrition support last year – one of several milestones published today in its first ‘Nuts Trails’ impact report, which shares 12 months of progress data towards its 2030 cashew and hazelnut sustainability goals. In Côte d’Ivoire for example,
where malnutrition
contributes to the stunted growth and development of 1 in 5 children, ofi’s cashew team partnered with the National Nutrition Program (PNN) to geo-locate and screen over 2,500 children in cashew communities using the newly developed Infant Malnutrition System Alert (IMSA) smartphone-based application. As a result, 49 moderate and acute cases were identified and referred to healthcare facilities. 10 boreholes were also installed to provide communities with access to safe drinking water. In Turkey, which produces two-thirds of the world’s
hazelnuts and relies on a large migrant workforce for the harvest season, over 1,500 female workers received health screenings and advice by ofi social workers to diagnose and prevent conditions such as diabetes and anaemia.
Ashok Krishen, CEO Nuts at ofi said: “Our own research
shows 58% of consumers expect to increase their plant- based consumption in the next two years and nuts are set to be at the heart of that growth, with cashews and hazelnuts, as well as almonds, strongly associated with being tasty, natural, and healthy. But as well as doing good for consumers, it’s important the nuts we source for our customers are also good for the people and communities that produce them. Together with our customers and partners, our teams on the ground work in and with these communities to improve access to vital health services and nutrition advice, as part of our strategy to find more creative, productive, and sustainable ways of supplying cashew and hazelnut ingredients.”
Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls agrees deal to supply Claridge’s hotel
Iconic sweet firm Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls has agreed a deal to supply one of the world’s most legendary luxury hotels – Claridge’s of London. The boiled sweets, first made in the kitchen of a Victorian
terraced house in Wigan in 1898, are still manufactured using the same original recipe and are known around the world. They soon became a local favourite and as their fame spread, so did the slogan “They keep you all aglow”. They will now be packaged in an exclusive Claridge’s tin and
given to guests as a departure gift. At the centre of London’s Mayfair since 1856, Claridge’s embodies grand English style,
timeless glamour and
impeccable, intuitive and highly tailored service. It is London’s art deco jewel, and home to elegant rooms and suites. During the 1920s it became an English institution; an art
deco landmark, loved by movie stars and statesmen, fashion designers and global dignitaries. Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls are made by Wigan-based William Santus and Co Ltd, a privately-owned traditional sweet company. The ownership has been passed down through the family generations and joint Managing Directors John and Antony Winnard are the great, great nephews of the company’s founder. They said: “We are honoured and delighted to have our
sweets stocked by such a world-famous hotel and hope that this is just the start of a relationship that will see Claridge’s guests from around the world getting the opportunity to enjoy Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls.”
