Kennedy’s Confection reports on how Perfetti Van Melle has modernised an existing packaging line to create a future-proofed solution that is now digitally connected to other areas of the factory and to management systems.

products for its consumers – preferably with the lowest possible environmental impact. To achieve this, the organisation relies on innovation. “Innovation has always been our key to success, when it comes to our products, processes, plants and technologies,” says Roberto Ripa, Plant Manager at Perfetti Van Melle’s site in Lainate, Italy.

Having realised that the digitalisation of its production lines has become unavoidable today, when Perfetti Van Melle set out to develop a packaging line to handle a new product format, it partnered with Italian automation specialist, Marchiani to help it modernise an existing production system in line with Industry 4.0 standards, in a bid to improve productivity, efficiency and ensure consistent product quality going forward. A number of aspects were considered as part of the modernisation project, including the need to avoid of product waste in order to become more sustainable. Another important aspect of the project was to improve
workstation ergonomics and to be able to acquire and utilise real-time production data. Commenting on the digitalisation of the packing line, Giulia Favrin, Process Engineer at Perfetti Van Melle says: “The new line is innovative both for the digitalisation of machinery and the ergonomics of the workstations. It allows us to broaden the culture of the operators working on the line to make them aware of the importance of efficiency. “The first benefit of digitalisation has been the ability to check, in real-time, the efficiency of the line at each machine and we are able to monitor the process parameters
