system. The internal hardware features of its MCUs with the necessary software simplify the development process to functional safety compliance. The certified software and reference solution for most Renesas MCUs (the RA and RX family of devices) have been designed to comply with IEC 61508 and include a certificate and safety manual. These software modules are certified under IEC 61508 parts 1-7. Part 3, specifically, stipulates the use of formal software design architectures, validation and testing as a core part of implementing functional safety.
Intelligence in functional safety The current evolution of machine learning/AI and higher-performance computing hardware are driving highly- efficient safety solutions. Whether for preventing systematic failures or anticipating and mitigating future risks, integration of various AI models is also
a key consideration for engineers when designing functional safety systems. The flow diagram in Figure 1 shows
how to achieve intelligent functional safety in industrial applications. During operation, being able to identify the fault at the right time and right location plays a crucial role, and a well set up AI/ML can do this, alongside mitigating actions. A field system with MCUs can collect data and enable AI/ ML algorithm frameworks to run freely, foreseeing and detecting anomalies. Ultimately this will improve safety and reduce downtime and related costs.
