Overcoming EMI and thermal management challenges of fully autonomous vehicles As the automotive industry moves toward more automated, connected vehicles, engineers are challenged to identify technologies that can process and transfer large volumes of data in real-time without adding significantly to the price of the vehicle. For example, Level-5 autonomous driving requires a combination of: • radar • Lidar • video camera technology • On-board computer systems to perform highly complex functions.
Accommodating all the necessary cameras, sensors and electronic control units (ECUs) that enhance connectivity and ensure autonomous vehicle safety has proven to be problematic due to the resulting electromagnetic interference (EMI)
and excess heat being generated by the growing complement of electronic devices, including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Parker Chomerics is aggressively responding to both challenges with EMI shields and thermal management technologies that contain the electromagnetic noise and transfer heat away from critical components. For more information visit:

ROLEC’s new colour-coded starCASE enclosures Colour-coded trims are now available as an option on ROLEC’s starCASE premium plastic enclosures for industrial electronics.
Elegant but tough IP 66 rated starCASE can be installed anywhere – on walls, machines and bulkheads. Applications include monitoring systems, HVAC controllers, safety equipment, factory automation, security systems and test and measurement.
The trims, which cover the lid and mounting screws, are now optionally available in red, blue or anthracite, in addition to the standard light grey (RAL 7035). They are fitted with non-detachable
hinges to stop them from being dropped or lost. Separate screw channels mean starCASE can be mounted ‘lid closed’ to protect the seal and electronics. The lid is recessed to accommodate a membrane keypad, product label or front plate. Integrated flexible support straps ensure the lid remains attached to the base when the unit is open. Inside, there are screw bosses for the installation of PCBs, mounting plates and terminal rails.

The material is decisive: EMC filters made of high frequency composite materials SMP offers "All Mode" EMC filters. EMC filters reduce interference currents and voltage spikes in power converters and other systems. The material of the filters plays a decisive part: the High Frequency Composite Materials (HFCM) developed and manufactured by
SMP in Germany are effective for frequencies up to the gigaHertz range and satisfy all of the requirements to which modern SiC and GaN applications are subject. The All Mode design damps both differential mode and common mode noise. By combining HFCM and All Mode technology it is possible to reduce the number of filter components needed in the system by about 50 percent. Among other advantages, this also means that common mode chokes or filters can be dispensed with. Compared to standard technologies which use materials such as ferrite, electrical steel sheets and nanocrystalline ribbon, EMC filters from SMP are noiseless, up to 40 percent lighter, and reduce interference levels by as much as 40 dB[µV]. Pulsonix has launched release 11.0 with outstanding new performance enhancements Visit our web site and see out how Pulsonix can deliver a cost-effective product solution for your PCB design needs. Showcasing V11.0, this exciting new release delivers enhanced performance with the use of multi-threading technology maximising your PCs core parallel processing capabilities. Where large designs require extra number crunching in routines such as Design Rules Checking
(DRC), Copper Pouring, Net optimisation and Gerber file generation, speed increases of up to 70% have been achieved.
A new graphics engine utilises standard DirectX graphics and high-performance graphics cards such as those used in the gaming industry to significantly improve redraw speed. High-speed design is improved with the inclusion of Back Drilling and Differential Pair rules to create multiple and complex Pairs automatically. The import of IPC-2581 and CSV format files from external sources means that complex verified layer stacks can be impedance calculated, optimised and then imported into Pulsonix, ready for use. New Creepage rules define, calculate and identify track paths for critical nets such as those used in medical devices and high-voltage designs. Visit
