The 5S can be linked to the Hisense ConnectLife app, allowing the consumer to analyse how much water and electricity they use and it can also suggest better ways to improve their energy usage. Over at Electrolux, sustainability is at the core of its operations. The brand is even one of the Sustainability Partners at the ERT Awards this year! The launch of its AEG EcoLine selection of appliances is part of its ‘green’ commitment. These machines include features such as the PowerClean programme, which ensures stain removal and can save consumers 30 per cent energy usage. There’s also ProSense technology, which automatically adjusts the time, water and energy usage of each load. Electrolux’s 9000 Series AbsoluteCare 8kg Washing Machine (right) has a 30 per cent better than ‘A’ Energy Rating and features Prosteam technology, which is a short cycle that refreshes clothes with

steam and uses 96 per cent less water than a normal wash. The manufacturer explains that it’s important

to offer these kinds of eco-friendly products because of increased consumer awareness and consideration for energy use. Research commissioned by AEG revealed that 72 per cent of people in the UK admit they have become more aware of wasting energy in the home since the rise in the cost of living. At Haier, Elliot Gee, who is the Laundry

Product Manager for the UK and Ireland, speaks about what an eco-function on a washing machine actually is. “Although eco cycles and eco programmes vary by brand, they essentially are a dedicated energy efficient cycle that uses less energy and water, while achieving the same washing result as an average daily cycle.

“Consumers should consider what features and programmes they’d find useful; for example Haier’s Direct Motion Motor is super quiet and efficient – it not only saves money on household bills but also allows the machine to be running and not interfere with consumers’ day-to-day home life. “Then our Hoover H-Wash 500 washing machines (above left) have an all-in-one 59 minute feature to allow users to complete a full load of washing in under an hour.” Meanwhile, the LG F4V1112BTSA 12kg Washing Machine TurboWash 360 automatically dispenses the precise amount of detergent with EZDispense; and with TurboWash 360 consumers can cut their wash time to just 39 minutes. David Palmer, Senior Product Specialist

Home Appliances, says: “LG’s commitment to creating eco-friendly appliances has led to them being amongst the only products in Europe to receive ‘A’ ratings in the new EU Energy Relabelling system, in line with our aggressive Zero Carbon 2030 initiative, committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from our global operations within nine years.” Miele has its WEI865 washing machine, which is equipped with features that “prioritise eco-friendliness”. The machine has a minimum ‘A’ rating and

incorporates the brand’s TwinDos autodosing system. This reduces detergent consumption by up to 30 per cent compared to manual.

Dishwashers

When it comes to dishwashers, everyone knows that they use a vast amount of water and energy in order to do their duties. However, the current generation of dishwashers have begun to become increasingly more environmentally- conscious. An example of this is with Beko’s HeatPump technology, achieving up to 20 per cent more energy efficiency than ‘A’ rated dishwashers. The brand also said that in some of its dishwashers it has started to use recycled plastics that have been obtained from recycling old products in its own production plants in Turkey. Hisense offers its HS693C60XAHUK dishwasher which comes with Auto Dose. Mr Glynn also explains that many of the brand’s dishwasher models feature a durable inverter motor – this clever feature helps to reduce both noise and energy consumption in the home. Hisense was

also recently awarded a

silver accreditation medal from EcoVadis, recognising the manufacturer’s commitment to sustainable business practises. On the subject of water saving, hot water dispensers are a convenient alternative to high energy use kettles. Graeme Rodger, Senior Category and Marketing Insights Manager at Strix, explains that the Aurora Instant Hot and Cold-Water Filter Dispenser (below) allows the user to select the exact volume and temperature of the beverage they’d like, with a possible 49 different combinations! “It is, effectively, a kettle, water cooler and

water filter all in one,” he says, “so it takes up less space on the kitchen worktop. >>
