Hughes Electrical has said it is reaping the rewards of a two-year programme designed to increase staff retention by greatly improving the benefits it offers. Over 600 of the retailer’s employees now enjoy a wide range of perks, including health insurance,
cycle-to-work scheme, gym discounts, two days paid leave to support a good cause, personal development opportunities, long service awards, plus a £250 junior ISA for new babies and £500 contribution to a wedding or civil partnership.

Mark Wardell: “Retaining and motivating quality staff to deliver outstanding levels of customer service is the key to success for our business. While Hughes offered staff benefits for many years, we took the decision to greatly enhance these as we emerged from the pandemic.”
Last year the company gave employees a £500 energy crisis payment; while this year there will be a £250 payment in October. It also believes in acting on what employees say in its six-monthly survey. “Feedback from the survey led to the introduction of the two days paid leave to support local causes,” said Mr Wardell. “Also, better training opportunities – delivered both internally and through our partnership with West Suffolk College. “As well as improved communications across the business with every member of staff having their own email, while we have also launched a staff portal.”
