Bittersweet: New documentary explores the rise and fall of Ireland’s fi rst sugar factory

A new radio documentary is exploring the people, industry and agricultural heritage behind Ireland’s fi rst major sugar factory, as the country marks 100 years of sugar production from Irish- grown beet. Bittersweet: The Rise & Fall of the Sugar

Factory examines the history of the Carlow sugar factory, which became an important part of the region’s industrial and agricultural landscape. Produced by Cleverality Productions for the

Carlow County Council Commemorations Committee, with support from the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, the hour-long documentary was launched at County Carlow Museum as part of Culture Night. Drawing on the memories of former factory

employees, sugar-beet growers and local residents, the programme explores how the factory connected agriculture with large-scale food processing, transport, engineering and skilled manufacturing, supporting generations of workers and growers.

It also examines how the operation evolved alongside changing technologies and production demands, as well as the impact of its eventual closure on employees and the surrounding community. Personal stories are central to the project, with the producer’s own grandfather having worked

at the factory throughout his working life. This family connection helped inspire an exploration of the people and skills behind the manufacturing operation. “Bittersweet is really about the people behind the factory,” the project’s producer explained. “It was a major manufacturing operation, but behind that were generations of workers, beet growers and families whose lives were connected to it.” As Ireland refl ects on a century of sugar production from Irish-grown beet, the documentary preserves an important chapter of the country’s industrial history, highlighting the close relationship between manufacturing and the agricultural communities that sustained it. Bittersweet: The Rise & Fall of the Sugar

Factory is available to listen to online. The project team is also available for interviews and can connect media with former factory employees and sugar-beet growers featured in the programme.
