PLASTICS & INJECTION MOULDING

process thermoplastics including polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon, polycarbonate, acetal and ABS, provided the material meets the machine’s melt- flow requirements. But the primary reason the benchtop format

works for SCOPOS is not really its size. It is the production rate. “The production rate and the number that we are producing was a real good fit with the machine,” says Holden. “We do probably 300 or 400 parts a week on the two machines. I divide it up between the two, and it can be up to 500 or 600 when we’re really getting the orders in.” If required, there is still more capacity. “I could probably do close to 2,000 a week with

my two machines if I ran them eight hours a day,” This allows SCOPOS to produce parts essentially as they are required instead of ordering much larger quantities from an outside supplier to achieve a favorable unit cost, then storing those parts until they are needed.

PRODUCING WITHOUT A DEDICATED MOULDING DEPARTMENT

The equipment also fits within Holden’s existing operation without requiring a dedicated injection moulding staff. There are four employees, and all are trained to operate the machines.

Most of the moulds are designed to automatically eject the completed component. Once the process

is set up, the machine can continuously produce parts. A few moulds require an employee to manually remove the finished part.

MAINTENANCE MATTERS Plastic injection moulding, by its nature, involves repeated exposure to heat and pressure. These are fundamental elements of the process required to melt the thermoplastic material, inject it into the mould, and repeatedly form finished components. Over time, that operating environment also means bearings and other mechanical components can require periodic attention.

Holden has completed occasional repairs

over five or six years of operation but says the equipment has held up well and he has been able to reach APSX, determine what is needed, and keep the machines operating. For SCOPOS, the value of the benchtop approach ultimately comes down to matching the equipment to the actual production requirement. The two machines occupy a useful space between prototype quantities and the much greater production volumes that would justify a larger moulding operation.
