DIY specialists reveal how to create Pinterest’s autumn cosy corner trend
As the seasons shift and autumn approaches, homeowners are eager to make their spaces cosier. According to Pinterest’s autumn trends report, searches for “cosy reading room” have surged by 140% and in response DIY experts BLACK+DECKER have shared their top three tips for creating a snug nook at home.
1. DIY shelving Pinterest’s search results show a yearning for cosy corners and one effective way to achieve this is by installing floating shelves or built in bookshelves. These shelving solutions would provide valuable extra storage for books, décor, and personal items, contributing to a well organised and inviting retreat. Nick comments “To DIY floating shelves, start by choosing sturdy wood planks and cutting them to your desired length. Sand the edges for a smooth finish, then stain or paint the wood to match your décor, use a dark wood stain for added warmth in your cosy corner. Next, locate the wall studs using a stud finder and mark where you’ll attach the brackets. Secure the brackets to the studs for strong support, ensuring they are level. Finally, place the shelves on the brackets and screw them in from underneath.”
2. Add decorative wall panelling If you’re looking to create a snug in an open plan room, decorative wall panelling is a great way to establish a distinct zone within the space, separating the cosy area from the rest of the room. This will help to add depth, texture and warmth to a larger space.
Nick adds “Start by measuring the wall and deciding on the height for your panels, typically one-third of the wall’s height to avoid making the nook feel too enclosed. Cut wood or MDF boards to size for the top and bottom rails and vertical stiles. Attach the bottom rail to the wall using adhesive and nails, followed by the vertical stiles at equal intervals. Then, secure the top rail above the stiles. Fill any gaps or nail holes with wood filler, sand smooth, and then paint or stain the wainscoting to match your décor.”

3. DIY upholstery Transforming a space into a cosy corner doesn’t necessarily mean purchasing new furniture, instead you can DIY upholster an old armchair using soft, durable fabric in a colour or pattern that compliments the nook.
Nick says “Re-upholstering an old armchair is easy, and it allows you to choose fabrics and colours that perfectly match your décor. Start by removing the old fabric carefully, noting how it was attached so you can copy. Use the old fabric pieces as templates to cut the new fabric. Replace or add padding if needed for extra comfort and begin reattaching the new fabric, starting with the seat and backrest, using a staple gun to secure it tightly. Fold the fabric neatly around the edges and corners and reattach any trim or buttons.”
