MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN

DIY Week speaks to chemical specialist, Barrettine about the company’s proud British manufacturing heritage and its current and future new developments.

T

he Barrettine Group has a proud history of trading from the beginnings of Britain’s global trading heritage.

In the heart of Bristol’s docks, 1879 would see the firm begin importing and trading in a variety of raw materials, including, shellac, tallow and bitumens. Fast forward to the present day and the subsequent years have seen the company build a prodigious and diverse level of expertise in the chemicals business, and it is builders and consumers who can benefit

from what is now an

extensive product range, appealing to a number of the trades. “Over the years the business would evolve to focus on the home and garden market, but there is still a comforting continuity with our past,” explains MD, Steve Bailey. “Materials like Shellac are used in

some of our wood care products, for instance, but at the same time we’re always looking to enhance and expand what we offer.” It is in the realm of wood care, in fact that Barrettine has welcomed the latest addition to what is now a family of over 250 products, with the Armourflex range embracing the latest technology for natural wood protection with many new exciting product developments coming in 2022. The Armourflex range now includes products for both interior and exterior wood protection where use of high-end quality wood has proved to be increasing popular in many properties, including

strength as the Armourflex Wood Floor Lacquer with rapid drying capability. Perfect for wooden stairs and spindles, doors, furniture and floors.

oak flooring and furniture with expensive cladding such as larch being used externally. As such, Barrettine has developed Armourflex Ultimate UV

the

Protection Oil, containing a premium blend of natural oils and protective resins, with innovative UV stabilising technology. It protects against the UV damage that causes wood to grey, whilst repelling water and deterring the surface growth of mould and algae. Due to its natural oil content, Barrettine Ultimate UV Protection Oil will give a deep, rich enhancement to the wood colour and retain its natural character protecting the wood for over two years. It has been developed for high value, architectural cladding projects but is also available for smaller domestic projects providing a superior protection and a beautiful finish for both quality joinery and wooden doors. To compliment the range, Barrettine has also developed a professional interior range of Varnish/Lacquers and Hardwax Oils. The new Craftsman’s Varnish will be available in 2022, utilising the same advanced technology and superior ceramic

Also joining the Armourflex stable is a new Armourflex Hardwax Oil. Internally tested against the market to offer superior strength and durability whilst maintaining the easy repair benefits of a traditional Hardwax Oil. Armourflex Hardwax Oil contains a blend of natural oils and waxes, suitable for protecting and enhancing the durability of all interior wood surfaces

including

hardwood, softwood, parquet and veneer. Resistant to common stains such as

wine, beer, fruit

juice, carbonated soft drinks, tea, and coffee, making it an all round interior wood protection product. Outside of these new exciting

products coming through to the market in 2022, the Nourish & Protect Woodcare range is a

part of Barrettine’s business, and is probably what end users know them for primarily, but many builders and consumers will be familiar with their paint stripping solutions, Paint Panther and Peelaway – the latter of which has been with us since the early 1970s.

Over the long lifetime of a period

property, multiple layers of paint will be applied to the likes of coving and decorative mouldings, often to the detriment of some of the intricate lines and detail of these features. Peelaway is designed to remove up to 32 individual layers but, if applied correctly, will not damage

significant

the valuable substrate. It is a unique and patented process, where the paste

is applied, then covered

with a specially designed blanket, and left to do its work. Where old lead paint may be present it is the cover that prevents any of the lead-based particles from entering the atmosphere and, compared to manual removal, or the use of heat guns, it represents a far safer option for both building occupants and tradespeople. Peelaway 1 is suitable for older, traditional paints including lead-based, whilst Peelaway 7 is designed for more modern water- and oil-based paints. It was, however, changes to regulations

European on what

chemicals could be used that would help both products to tear a strip off the competition. With the demise of the potentially carcinogenic methylene chloride as an ingredient, the entire paint stripping market experienced a seismic shift in 2010, with some brands then forced to radically alter their formulations. In some cases, performance suffered, and that would open a space for the reformulated Peelaway and its stable partner, Paint Panther. Launched by Barrettine in that very year, Paint Panther is the more aggressive, and highly effective, spirit based solution that will quickly remove almost any of the typical paints you will encounter. Barrettine’s divisional Director, Phil Gibbins tells us more: “To a professional, time is always money and its speed is certainly one of its best attributes. We will again be doing the very popular demonstration at the Paint & Decorating trade show 2021 (Stand 24) where we’ll remove six layers from a substrate in just five minutes.” With a business heritage of nearly a century and a half, and a tradition of innovation along all of those long years, this is one chemical company that professionals and consumers alike will continue to have a very positive reaction.
