what you can expect from the show.

“Whether big or small we can all make a difference, if not for

ourselves - for our children”

Founded in 1874

With our fantastic editor, Fiona, enjoying a well deserved break in sunny Spain, I’m happy to bring you this issue which gives us a great insight into the Chelsea Flower Show, Exclusively and sustainability in the industry. The latter is an issue particularly close to my heart and we’re seeing the industry embracing the importance of being environmentally conscious more and more. Every year, more than 14 billion pounds of rubbish is dumped into the world’s ocean, and most of it is plastic that is toxic to marine life. And although as much as it is an individual choice to make environmental changes to your personal lifestyle, I’m so glad our industry are pioneering and driving change, and taking responsibility for what we have control over. Businesses like Kingfisher and Gordale garden centre, both winners of the DIY Week Sustainability award 2019, show us that whether big or small, we can all make a difference, if not for ourselves for our future generations - for our children. The Chelsea Flower show was again displaying a very clear message about encouraging younger gardeners to grow plants, fruits and vegetables. And although, it may seem going back to a traditional way of life with more natural resources seems the way to go, the Montessori Centenary Children’s Garden was all about embracing both the advancement of technology with hydroponics, alongside an organic growing method. Even the Exclusively show, focused on housewares, with one of the main trends identified being products that address pollution and promotes evironmental awareness. One of the main ones which stood out to me was the If You Care kitchen and household products, which showcased re-usable natural rubber gloves, FSC, compostable and chlorine-free paper sandwich bags, and non-stick parchment roasting bags, all created to have the least environmental impact and the lightest carbon footprint possible. Not to mention the amount of reusable water bottles that were seen at the show. In fact, after months of hounding our product news coordinator, Ed, about the little single-use plastic cups he would use every day in the office for his water, I was absolutely delighted to see him return from Exclusively with his very own water bottle. I’m aware that makes me sound absolutely ridiculous, but hey, it’s the small things that make a big difference, right?
