DIY WEEK AWARDS 2018 Retailer of the Year

(turnover <£10m) presented by Stax operations director Nigel Wright

WINNER Tool Shop

The judges said: “Tool Shop stands out on so many accounts. This is a real team effort, with a great frontman. The business is still passionately opening more branches in a tougher climate and is showing good growth. With both online trading and great stock control, Tool Shop really covers all of the detail.”

FINALISTS Broad Street DIY

Ruthin Décor

L-R: Nigel Wright from Stax Trade Centres, with Tool Shop’s Vin and Anu Vara, and host Marcus Brigstocke

L-R: Matthew Bent, Kate Ganley, Heather Hiley, Emma Kelly, and Brian Daniels from Bents Garden & Home

Retailer of the Year (turnover >£10m)

Presented by Sika Everbuild business development manager Jamie Singh

WINNER Bents Garden & Home

The judges said: “Bents is a bold business that has seen incredible growth but it still maintains that ‘family feel’. It’s a real destination garden centre and operates on a large scale but it is still engaging, offers outstanding customer service and doesn’t make anything feel corporate.”

FINALIST Squire’s Garden Centres

L-R: Colin Petty and Vin Vara, with Marcus Brigstocke Industry Personality of the Year

Presented by industry consultant and former DIY Week publisher, Colin Petty

WINNER Vin Vara

The judges said: “This year’s winner wears two hats – he is both a successful independent retailer and the first person to ever be asked to serve two terms as president of the British Independent Retailer’s Association. He has worked tirelessly for the association over the years and has raised its profile significantly, gaining serious media coverage and lobbying on the issues that affect its members. “Never one to shy away from an opportunity or a challenge, Vin Vara is a regular presence on TV and radio news shows and has become a voice for the independent retailer, speaking out on everything from business rates to acid sales. He has done an exceptional job and, as a BIRA president, he is arguably the best I’ve ever seen.”
